- Block, Inc. (NYSE: SQ) operates as a technology company focused on financial services, commerce, and bitcoin ecosystems, providing payment processing, point-of-sale solutions, and cryptocurrency-related products. The company offers Square, a suite of financial tools including payment processing hardware and software, Cash App for peer-to-peer payments, bitcoin trading, and debit card services; Afterpay for buy-now-pay-later financing; TBD for decentralized finance platforms; and Tidal for music streaming subscriptions. Block serves small and medium-sized businesses, consumers, and enterprises across consumer payments, financial services, and bitcoin segments, with global operations in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Japan, and Ireland. Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Oakland, California, the company rebranded from Square, Inc. to Block, Inc. in December 2021 to reflect its broader portfolio beyond the Square brand. Recent developments include the launch of Bitkey, a self-custody bitcoin wallet, in 2024; expansion of Cash App's bitcoin services with new trading features; and strategic investments in bitcoin mining technology through Proto, announced in 2024, alongside ongoing partnerships with entities like Uber for payment integrations.
